CBD in proper dosages gives nearly the same pain reduction compared to opioid prescription drugs, such as morphine, hydrocodone, and oxycodone, and when combined with these drugs, allows you to use far less of the actual prescription, thus reducing the toxic load on your liver and kidneys. And of course, as you already know, these benefits come without the proven addictive or unsafe nature of opioid drugs.
People who experience psychosis may produce too much or even too little cannabinoids (from overactive dopamine receptors). CBD is milder than our internal cannabinoids and helps to re-establish a balance of cannabinoids in the brain. CBD also helps lower inflammation, which is often increased in schizophrenia. THC, on the other hand, is stronger than our internal cannabinoids (anandamide and 2-AG), this way potentially triggering psychosis [R+, R].
Several studies conducted between 2004 and 2008 demonstrated the variable effect of different cannabinoids on sleep. In one, 15 mg of THC appeared to have sedative properties, while 15 mg of CBD appeared to have alerting properties.[416] Another tested the effects of CBD on animal models in both lights-on and lights-off environments and found that this non-psychoactive cannabis compound increased alertness with the lights on and had no discernable effects on lights-off sleep. The study’s authors concluded that CBD might actually hold therapeutic promise for those with somnolence, or excessive daytime sleepiness from a not-so-good night’s rest. Another study found CBD to be wake-inducing for most subjects, though some reported better sleep a few hours after taking it. [417]
An animal study using mice found repeated administration of CBD may help the hippocampus regenerate neurons, which could be useful for treating anxiety or depression. Research shows both SSRIs and CBD may promote neurogenesis. This is significant, because evidence suggests that severely impaired neuronal plasticity may influence suicidal behavior. Future research comparing CBD and SSRIs effect on neurogenesis could open up promising new avenues in how we understand depression and how to most effectively treat it.
Very interesting article. I have terrible anxiety and nausea and I have been working with a Functional Medicine Practitioner for my gut issues, plus I have Hashimoto’s, under active thyroid, post menopause and also a mycotoxin issue. I wake up with anxiety and nausea every day, some days not quite so bad as others. I have absolutely no idea what is driving my anxiety. I am on SSRI’s and have been for years but they arn’t working that well anymore but I am on Seroxat so not looking to wean off because it’s the worst one on the market.
It was in early 2014 that my veterinarian friend first recommended I look into CBD oil for dogs. My oldest dog was suffering from arthritis and my middle dog had recently begun suffering from severe anxiety any time I walked toward the door.  The CBD oil did wonders for both my dogs. Since then, I’ve been a strong advocate for CBD Treats and Oil for Dogs.

Hi, In your wonderful CBD overview above you state that the reason you started using CBD oil in the first place was to lower your cortisol levels. Did you succeed? If you are comfortable with doing so can you share the ‘before’ levels and the ‘after’ levels? Or maybe just the amount of the drop (average)..?? And, was this CBD product you now sell the one that you were using then?
For anxiety, there are two types of CBD oil products that are particularly effective. The first, and probably easiest for beginners, is by taking a CBD oil tincture. This can be pure CBD oil, or it can be mixed with other natural ingredients like peppermint oil, or honey. Tinctures can be administered sublingually, which is where you would put 3-5 drops under your tongue and hold them there to allow it to absorb; mixing it into food or drink is also an option. There are a few places online where you can find capsules containing CBD oil as well.
Until 2017, products containing cannabidiol that are marketed for medical purposes were classed as medicines by the UK regulatory body, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and could not be marketed without regulatory approval for the medical claims.[88][89] CBD oil with THC content not exceeding 0.2% was legalized throughout the UK in 2017.[citation needed] Cannabis oil, however, remained illegal to possess, buy and sell.[90]
